Maná has been one of Mexico’s best known bands, in various foms for many years. Here is a wonderful collaboration with Colombian superstar Shakira.
Amandititita – An Acoustic Peformance
I’ve been mesmerized for years by this diminutive performer who sings outrageously funny songs about ordinary people and their idiosyncrasies… all to a cheesy but hypnotic cumbia beat.
I just found this unplugged, gentler version of one of her well-known songs, with only herself, a guitar and an accordion.
Los Rockin Devil’s – Es Lupe
I suppose if you really concentrate on the name of the song, you might guess which famous 60s pop song this apostrophe-challenged Mexican band reinterpreted in Spanish… Great fun!

A song by the lovely Alicia Villareal, whose wonderful voice and upbeat personality made Grupo Limite my very favorite Norteño group in the 1990s.

Cumbia Rebajada in Monterrey
Monterrey has been the center of a Cumbia culture that has evolved since the Colombian style of music was introduced in the 1960s. Unique clothing, hair and dance styles have all developed, as has a rather interesting musical adaptation called Cumbia Rebajada. That’s where they take a regular Cumbia and slow it down.
