Natalia Lafourcade has been a a popular singer-songwriter in Mexico for several years. This is a lovely song, and an interesting video.
Maná has been one of Mexico’s best known bands, in various foms for many years. Here is a wonderful collaboration with Colombian superstar Shakira.
I’ve been mesmerized for years by this diminutive performer who sings outrageously funny songs about ordinary people and their idiosyncrasies… all to a cheesy but hypnotic cumbia beat.
I just found this unplugged, gentler version of one of her well-known songs, with only herself, a guitar and an accordion.
Monterrey has been the center of a Cumbia culture that has evolved since the Colombian style of music was introduced in the 1960s. Unique clothing, hair and dance styles have all developed, as has a rather interesting musical adaptation called Cumbia Rebajada. That’s where they take a regular Cumbia and slow it down.
