Author Orfa Alarcón gives us a remarkably realistic and well-developed character in Fernanda, the girlfriend of the top assassin for a local drug cartel. Perceived by her peers to be a “queen,” the luxurious life she lives is in exact counterpoint to the fear, violence and loneliness she endures on a daily basis.

An eye-opening portrayal of police corruption viewed from the inside, this book by one of Mexico’s leading authors, conveys the level of fear and paranoia that many Mexicans feel when dealing with the authorities. A frustrated journalist leaves the profession to join the judicial police force, with the intent of gathering first-hand material for the novel he plans to write. His plans change when he comes under the scrutiny of the police chief for his articles that constantly criticized the government. An exciting read.

A remarkable novel dealing with the power of the press, elected politicians and the entrenched interests of the “petroleum mafia” in Mexico of the 1980s. An ambitious politician plays on an influential journalist’s feelings for the politician’s wife to take control of valuable property in Tamaulipas and force his way to the table with the big players in the oil industry. Corruption, greed, betrayal and murder are served up compellingly by a great writer. I loved this book.

I’m fascinated that there are so many different takes on the fantasy of meeting your doppelganger. Jose Saramago wrote a book in which the protagonist feels he must kill the doppelganger. I wrote an unpublished novel in which the main character is seduced by his doppelganger into morally questionable actions. José Augustín has an entirely different, highly entertaining and original approach.

Junot Diaz says Solares is one of the best Latin American writers, and this is one of the best books he's read in the last 10 years… I agree.

36 Tons: How Much Does a Death Sentence Weigh? Acapulco writer Iris Cuevas gives us a powerful book about identity, corruption and loss. A man wakes up in a hospital after extensive surgery, only to realize he has lost his memory. Terrified by his helplessness, he escapes from the hospital and follows various clues to Acapulco, where he learns he was somehow involved in a deal for 36 tons of stolen cocaine, brokered by the police and the army. The money has apparently disappeared, and some seriously unpleasant people are convinced that he knows where it is. A powerful, frightening story.

Historia de sexo y violencia en el Mexico de nuestros dias, 36 toneladas presenta a un hombre que, luego de una cirugia, recobra la consciencia para descubrir que ha perdido la memoria. Su vinculo con el pasado es un hombre de gafas oscuras que lo hostiga con una pregunta: Donde quedo el dinero? Apenas logra huir del hospital, el desmemoriado se dirige a Acapulco y luego a Chilpancingo, donde se entera de una sordida historia de corrupcion en la que, igual que importantes autoridades de Guerrero, el estuvo involucrado: 36 toneladas de cocaina decomisadas por la judicial fueron revendidas por el ejercito. Pero eso no es suficiente: el aun tiene que escapar de quienes lo persiguen, recuperar el dinero de la venta de la cocaina, y descubrir su verdadera identidad.

The very name “The Kingdom of Flies” invokes the desolation of the harsh, dry place where this book takes place. Second in a trilogy that started with the wonderfully named Corazon de Kalashnikov, Northern Mexico and the people who struggle to make a life there are presented in a way we have never imagined. Individuals and families are tested by theft, murder and corruption, but most of all by the place itself… the kingdom of the flies. There is a sense of hyper-reality, as if every human thought and emotion is examined under a spotlight. A terrific read!

En esta novela, todo se paga y se corresponde. Si hay buena voluntad de una parte, la habrá de la otra; si no la hay sólo queda la opción de escapar hasta que se cumpla la sentencia fatal. El autor no perdona a sus personajes porque en ese México recreado por el lenguaje, el concepto de perdón lo poseen sólo algunos sujetos, que como en el mundo real y tangible, son los menos y casi nunca aparecen. Pareciera que todos pagan, los que deben mucho, los que deben poco y los que nada deben. El reino que propone Páez Varela es uno en donde, al modo de la vida misma, los personajes femeninos determinan la historia, ya sea porque influyen en ella, ya sea porque en ocasiones la historia misma gira en torno a ellas. Y sin embargo, no es un reino sólo de mujeres. Ellas son los cimientos y la techumbre de la casa narrativa donde sucede la gracia y la tragedia al estilo del norte.

The story of a low-level police officer nicknamed Comandante Amarillo and his partner Teniente Cinta, because they are responsible for cordoning off murder scenes with yellow tape before the regular police arrive and loot the victims. He is dragged against his will into a huge deal involving senior police officers and the local cartels, and finds himself way over his head. Good book.

A wonderful novel, focusing on the life and career of el Chalo Gaitán, who bears a remarkable resemblance to el Chapo Guzmán. Terribly cynical, but frighteningly realistic, el Chalo boasts of corruption, murder and betrayal at a level far beyond the imagination. Compellingly, and seductively written, Sinaloa writer Alejandro Almazan gives us a great payoff at the end.

El Chalo Gaitán no es el Chapo Guzmán, pero cómo se le parece. Él también se fugó de un penal de máxima seguridad; la revista Forbes lo considera uno de los hombres más ricos del mundo; encabeza la lista de los más buscados de la CIA; trafica y corrompe con la misma facilidad con la que se enamora; y vive bajo el amparo del gobierno mexicano. En El más buscado, sin embargo, al Chalo le arrebatarán esa protección el día en que el procurador Villalobos es asesinado: el propio capo entenderá que sus horas están contadas. Por eso mandará traer con urgencia al Cuervo, un veterano compositor de narcocorridos que, justo una noche antes, había decidido retirarse. El Chalo le contará su historia como si de matar se tratara: sin sentimientos de culpa.
