Ixote – Mexico City – Duck Enchiladas
Duck enchiladas in a stunning black Oaxacan mole. At the lovely Polanco restaurant Ixote. Lunch cost more than my hotel that night, but a) I was staying at an inexpensive hotel, and b) it would have been worth it at any price.
Mysterious Tacos – Mexico City
I never quite had the courage to try the tacos at this wonderful stand on Av. Buenos Aires. I think I recognize chorizo, tripas and nopales, but there are all sorts of other goodies cooking away in this gigantic pan… I suspect the reason I didn’t try it is that it is just down the street from my favorite place for Tacos al Pastor. I’ll tell you about that in a later post.
Diana – Zona Rosa. Mexico City
They do like their “Dianas” in Mexico… Diana, the goddess of hunting. The seem to be everywhere, but this one is in the Zona Rosa in Mexico City on a quiet morning.
Pastelería Ideal – Mexico City
The most remarkable bakery I’ve ever seen. There’s an entire large section of the store dedicated to cake decoration.
Sopa Seca de Fideos – Sobrinos. Mexico City
“Dry noodle soup,” one of my favorite casual Mexican dishes. Noodles tossed in a spicy sauce, topped with chicharrones, chopped chicken, sour cream and avocado. This wonderful restaurant in the Roma neighborhood make one of the best.
Casa de la Condesa – Roma, Mexico City

A wonderfully unique hotel, right in my favorite neighborhood of Mexico City. Set on a street with buildings that go back perhaps to the 1920s, every room in this hotel is different, with a nod to historic styles. The rooms are comfortable, and staff is pleasant. The neighborhood is peaceful, with large trees, walking paths and fountains. People walk their dogs here after 11:00 PM. There are plenty of nice restaurants nearby, and it’s just a short walk to the famous Zona Rosa. Rates are surprisingly low.

Stunningly beautiful hotel, decorated in historic colors, right in the “Beverly Hills” of Mexico City. One of my favorite hotels anywhere.
Torta de Pastor – Ana Maria, Grand Central Market. Los Angeles
Spicy marinated pork, sliced from the vertical grill, on a fresh roll with lettuce, tomato, avocado and refried beans… Niiiiiice!
